The Guerilla FilmMakers Masterclass REDUX 2009
STOP PRESS -
We just ran the Guerilla Film Makers Masterclass
REDUX 2009 in Australia to RAVE reviews! AND NOW
BACK IN THE UK FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE UK FOR 18
MONTHS!
'It was truly an empowering experience and one that
I know Jason, Greg and myself absolutely needed. In
fact it was precisely what we needed. Chris was
unquestionably the most honest, candid, and generous
film maker I have had the pleasure to meet. He met
each day with extraordinary energy and crammed those
days not merely with information, but with
affirmation and ultimately inspiration. He treated
every participant with such wonderful respect and
patience regardless of experience, and offered to us
not only tools and ideas but himself. To be honest,
I learned more in those two days than I have in
years of filmmaking, not just about the craft, but
about myself. If I was weary, frustrated and
uncertain of my standing in a filmic world when I
arrived, I have departed, energised, focused and
tremendously excited about taking our work to the
next phase. In short- a life changing experience.'
Shane Emmett, Film Maker, QLD, Australia
'After producing a string of award-winning
short-films and doco's, and frustrated at not being
able to move to the next stage with our concepts, we
were feeling spent and disillusioned. Then we met
Chris Jones' at his Guerrilla Filmmakers workshop in
Gympie, Australia. Wow, man he put the steel back
into our rod. The passion is back...we are on the
road again...watch out world...here we come'
Greg Hall, Producer - The Treehive, Australia
'I just wanted to say thank you so much for coming
all the way to Australia to do the Guerilla
Masterclass! Even though there were almost 30 other
people in the room, it felt like everything you were
saying was directed right at me - it was everything
I needed to hear and learn.'
Candice Deere, Writer/Producer from Maryborough,
Australia
The Guerilla FilmMakers Masterclass July 4/5
Why
isn’t my movie in production?
Why isn’t my career moving forward as I would like
it to be?
Why don’t the people who matter return my calls?
Where can I get the money?
What should I make to ensure maximum impact?
How will I survive?
If you ever ask yourself any of these questions,
then the two day Guerilla Film Makers Advanced
Masterclass at Ealing Studios is for you. Run by
veteran film maker of
three feature films
and author of
The Guerilla Film Makers
Handbook series, this roller coaster
course is an empowering and perspective changing
event for film makers. And over
1,000 have already taken this course... And Chris is
just back from a whirlwind world tour which has seen
him attending festivals across the globe, running seminars and doing
deals in LA after his latest film was Oscars shortlisted.
Designed to give YOU the practical knowledge you
need to make your first feature film - IN THE REAL
WORLD - whilst arming
you psychologically, The Guerilla Film Makers
Advanced Masterclass will be the most intense
two days an emerging film maker could ever
experience.

There’s no huge auditorium here, we
only hold small and interactive classes, allowing
each and every attendee maximum interactivity.
All attendees also receive additional materials
including example screenplays and an all new Post
Production Flow Chart poster for your cutting room
wall, to ensure you don’t go off the rails during
editing.
Common Pitfalls YOU can avoid...
We cover the whole process, from conception through
completion, but particular emphasis is given to the
common pitfalls encountered, and in particular, we
demystify certain areas of
film industry mythology such as...
What business and legal structures do I need in
place?
Which digital formats should I chose and why?
How do I get named actors?
What film should I make and why?
How much will it cost and how long will it take?
Where can I get the money?
What is the best way post produce?
How do I sell my movie overseas?
How do I get my movie in cinemas and in Blockbuster?
How do I get to festivals and win awards?
What should I do next and why?
We also ask the BIGGEST
QUESTION...
WHY...? It's this component
that informs the whole weekend, and is the genesis
for the AMAZING TRANSFORMATION that many attendees
experience. Buckle up!

The BIG question… Why do you want to do this?
In order to frame the workshop for you, we ask a
simple question, WHY? For many delegates, the answer
is different to their preconception, and that moment
of realization creates a whole new and INCREDIBLE
POSSIBILITY!
They
Did It!
We show you how we went from big ideas and no
money, to a micro budget thriller, awards, cinema
release, and agent courting, leading all the way to
Hollywood and multi-million dollar deal movies.
The Career Model
A framework to help YOU better understand where
you are in your career so you can make informed
choices instead of relying on outdated film makers
myths. .
The Tools For Success
We look at the different tools you can use in
your every day career that will impact immediately
on your ability to move forward quickly and
professionally.
What Do You Want To Make?
Explore your reasons and ambition for making a film
as this will define the all important question of,
What Should I Make? Genre driven commercial product
or Miramax attracting calling card?
HD - What does that really mean?
There is a great deal of confusion about HD and how
it can impact on production, post production, and
sales. We explain what it will mean to shoot HD and
what formats are better.
If
It Aint On The Page
The screenplay is the foundation of any good movie.
We show you the tools you need to write a movie and
explore the techniques employed by top screenwriters
to tighten drama and action.
Counting Your Pennies
So where does the money come from? We explore the
different avenues, from industry cash to soft cash,
and why you should NEVER mortgage your parents home.
Case studies illuminate the advantages and
disadvantages of several different approaches.
How Much?
We show you just how little money you actually need
to make a film, and show you where to spend every
penny. Includes budget templates and contracts.
Legal
Mechanisms
Setting up the entity through which your movie is
created is simple yet essential. We navigate the
waters of incorporation, partnerships and VAT. How
to get free advice from lawyers and accountants.
Casting
The right cast is vital. How to get the right actors
for your movie, how to deal with agents and how to
get your script to that Hollywood superstar.
Here We Go
You’re all ready to go - or are you? Pre production
is the blue print of your movie. Skip this stage and
your shoot could turn into a nightmare. We explain
the principles and distil the process to it’s
essentials.
...And
You’re Away
You are there - the first day of principle
photography. But staying there with a minimum of
headache is the key. We show you how to run your
shoot smoothly and deal with common problems such as
cast, catering and crew.
And All The Rest
There’s much more to a good movie than script and
cast. We look at all the other departments,
production design, stills, sets, costumes, makeup,
effects, stunts and explore the debate of how
important production value can be.
Production Management
Managing the project is essential and often a great
way to save enormous amounts of money. We show you
just what kinds of deals you can get and the best
way to stretch your pound.
Put The
Camera Over There
Directing a low budget film can be more of an
exercise than a creative experience. With tips and
tricks, we show you how to get the very best
coverage from your limited resources.
The Camera
Most producers become mystified by the art of
lighting, lenses and other camera issues. We lift
this thin veil to show you exactly how the camera
works, from depth of field and exposure to the trade
off between zooms and dolly shots
Sound
Always neglected, sound is a crucial element to the
success of any film. We show you how to get the best
on set sound, then fix your problems in post and add
a soundtrack worthy of a $40m Hollywood epic.
We’ll
Fix It In The Post
INCLUDES POST PRODUCTION POSTER FLOWCHART
Post Production is the least understood and most
costly area of film making. Yet it needn’t be. With
a little planning and understanding of basic
concepts, post production can be an enjoyable ride.
Now We Need To Sell It?
Sales agents and distribution are the second
important stage of the film making process. We
explain how this works, what realistic timescales
and targets should be set and how to get the most
out of what you have.
Film Festivals
International festivals are a great way to jet set
across the globe on other peoples accounts. They are
also amazingly good platforms from which to launch
your movie and career, as well as collect awards.
Markets
Films are traded at large international markets in
both Europe and the States. We tell you where and
when the markets take place, how they work, how to
get to them and what you can expect from the
experience of attending.
Life Blood
The press are the life blood of any films exposure.
We show you how to manipulate the press, collate
press packs and control the timing in order to
maximise your movie’s potential.
It’s Been A Long Time
It may have been a long time since you began your
movie, yet now is the crucial moment. You must be
sure of what you made, why you made it and be able
to put it in a pigeon hole for both industry &
consumer viewing.
The Sky Is
The Limit
You’ve done it and it’s a success. Agents are
ringing, Hollywood is knocking on your door. This is
a bewildering and dangerous stage where choice can
destroy or define a career. We speak from experience
about just what could happen and how to deal with
Feedback from recent International Dates
FEEDBACK FROM LONDON - 2008
'I
can most definitely confirm that my life changed over
the weekend, apart from not being able to sleep on
Sunday evening until 3am, and Monday being a
continual buzz of energy and excitement!!! I know I have
stepped into a new phase of my life, been on the edge of
it for too long… You can rest assured you not only have
a talent for story telling, and making great movies but
also changing people's lives. That's a gift! It was both
inspiring and intensive - it’s film school in a
weekend! It’s amazing what you can learn in a short
amount of time… It made me look at life through the
camera lens, you are totally exposed and suddenly
everything makes sense…'
Heather Freedland, Film Maker and Marketing Expert
'Thank you for
the weekend. Seriously. I learned more useful, practical
and inspiring tips and advice in the two days than I had
in four years at university on a film course. I came
away fired up for the challenge ahead of me and
motivated to tackle it. Feel the fear and do it anyway.
It looks set to be a busy and exciting couple of months
and beyond. Thanks again for giving me the additional
shove I needed to get out there and seize every possible
opportunity…'
Helen MacIntyre, Writer Director
VANCOUVER,
CANADA 2008
‘The past two days have filled me with excitement
and enthusiasm that I only felt prior to my three
years at film school…’
Josh Rainhard, Director
‘I am blown away at how much incredible info
Chris taught me in two days…’
Taroh Hall, Film Maker
‘Your honest, vulnerable energy, combined with
clarity and fun made this seminar a powerful tool
for transformation in my perception of who I am as a
film maker, and for that I send you my heartfelt
thanks… Who you are in your books and films, opened
the door to seeing who I could… This is new. This
works. This is a rare gift. Thank you Chris!’
Kathy Fedori, Film Maker

Notes on Attending and Accommodation
1.
Ealing Studios can normally accommodate parking at
weekends, but there are no guarantees. If there is
no onsite parking there are several roads behind the
studios where you can park. So far we have never
turned anyone away. The nearest tube stop is Ealing
Broadway, which is on the District and Central
Lines. The Piccadilly Line is also close with South
Ealing tube stop. A map of the local area is
here.
2. Kick off is 9.00am on Saturday and 9.30am on
Sunday – sharp.
3. Before attending it’s a good idea to think about
what you want out of the course. If you have any
areas where you want to ask questions, make a list.
Don’t rely on remembering as information can come
thick and fast over the two days.
4. The course discussion ends at around 7.00pm,
depending on how many questions have been asked
during the day. After this there is a screening on
White Angel on the Saturday and Urban Ghost Story on
the Sunday. It is advisable that you make
arrangements to stay and watch these movies and not
leave early. They are around 90 mins each.
5. While there are snacks, tea, coffee and water
throughout the day, there is no break for dinner at
7.00pm, so you may want to pack something to eat.
Accommodation
If you can rough it, £10 a night buys you a bed in a
Hostel.
